How to install Active Backup for Business Agent on your Mac

This article will walk you through the process of installing and uninstalling Active Backup for Business Agent on your Mac.

Before you start

Important: Active Backup for Business Agent supports macOS Catalina 10.15.7 or newer. Update your Mac to a compatible version before proceeding.

Check if your Mac computer uses Apple silicon or Intel processors. The installation differs according to which processors are used.

  1. On the top left corner, click the Apple logo > About This Mac. This opens an overview of your Mac.

  2. On the Overview tab, find Processor or Chip.
    • On Mac computers with Apple silicon, About This Mac shows an item labeled Chip, followed by the name of the chip.
    • On Mac computers with an Intel processor, About This Mac shows an item labeled Processor, followed by the name of the Intel processor.

First-time setup

  1. Download and run the Active Backup for Business Agent installer from the Download Center (under Dekstop Utilities).
  2. During the process, you will see a system extension alert. Changing the settings ensures that the agent can function properly and that your Mac can be backed up.
  3. Click Open Security Preferences to open Security & Privacy.

  4. Click Enable system extensions. If the lock at the bottom left is locked, click it to unlock the preference pane. If your macOS version is macOS Big Sur 11 or above, you must restart your Mac to apply the new setting. If your Mac uses Apple silicon, proceed to the following steps.

  5. If you're using a Mac with Apple silicon, you will see the pop-up shown in the following image after the installation. You must change the system security level in Recovery mode to allow system extensions. This allows the agent to run properly and your Mac to be backed up.

  6. Click the Apple logo > Shut Down. Press and hold the power button until you see "Loading startup options". Click Options > Continue. The Recovery app will open.

  7. On the menu bar at the top of the desktop, click Utilities > Startup Security Utility.

  8. Select the startup disk, which should be named "Macintosh HD" if you didn't change its name. Click Security Policy.

  9. Select Reduced Security and then Allow user management of kernel extensions from identified developers.

  10. Click OK. Restart your Mac for the changes to take effect.
  11. After the restart, open the agent to configure connection settings.

Uninstallation

  1. Open the Finder on your Mac, then click Applications from the sidebar.
  2. Control-click on Active Backup for Business Agent and select Show Package Contents.
  3. Open the "Contents" folder. Double-click Uninstall Active Backup for Business Agent to start uninstalling the agent.
