The Company
Founded in 1984, ICU Medical, Inc is a healthcare company based in San Clemente, California that develops, manufactures, and sells medical technologies used in vascular therapy, oncology and critical care applications. ICU Medical was named one of the 100 Most Trustworthy Companies in America by Forbes Magazine.
The Challenge
ICU Medical uses a fleet of over 50 virtual machines (VMs) to run important operational systems, manufacturing execution systems (MES), and control systems. Unfortunately, the technology team experienced several challenges related to protecting that virtual machine data.
First, because the team needed to protect large datasets that were being frequently modified, they needed an on-premises backup appliance that could carry out backups with higher performance and greater reliability than their existing cloud backup solution.
Second, as ICU Medical's environment grew, including the addition of 17 new engineering servers, their annual backup subscriptions increased as well. The technology team needed a backup and recovery solution that would reduce recurring costs and easily accommodate new systems.
The Solution
The team at ICU Medical installed a 24-bay all-flash server from Synology's FlashStation series of products and migrated backups of their servers and virtual machines entirely to Active Backup for Business. Active Backup for Business is a license-free backup software included with Synology hardware that centralizes server, VM, and Cloud backups.
The Benefits
By switching to an on-premises, all-flash Synology server, ICU medical significantly increased the speed, reliability, and consistency of server and VM backups compared to their previous cloud solution.
Additionally, because Active Backup for Business is included with Synology hardware and does not require licensing fees, the team at ICU Medical was able to drastically reduce their annual total cost of ownership. And with no per-system licensing fees, the team can protect data on new systems as they are deployed without incurring additional backup costs.
